From this article you will learn why we stick in social networks instead of work and study, as well as how to trick the brain and learn effectively.

- I want to learn layout effectively, but I can’t concentrate on boring material.
- Is it possible to become a programmer if I am n years old?
“I can't write code because of procrastination.”

These and similar questions are familiar to beginning and continuing programmers, and to all other representatives of the creative class. We get tired, stick for hours on social media feeds, drink tea endlessly, fight constant drowsiness - we do everything except really important things. Everything is easy for us except learning new things and work.

Why it happens? About this in the article.

Spoiler: We misuse the brain and fall into its traps.

Why the brain does not want to learn

The good news is: you cannot understand and correctly apply recursion not because of laziness or lack of programming skills. Difficulties in learning new material in most people arise due to improper use of the brain. It's like with an ax: if you try hard, you can split the log with a butt. But it’s much more effective to cut with a point.

Barbara Oakley, a professor at the University of California at San Diego, says our brain works in two modes. It is focused and relaxed or diffused. Both modes are important for successful training or work. Therefore, it is important to understand and be able to use them correctly.

Concentrated mode is activated when we solve complex and non-trivial tasks. It also works when we try to understand something new, we are engaged in an applied activity unknown to us. For example, if you have never used Chinese chopsticks and mastered this tool, the brain works in concentrated mode.

To enable focused mode, try eating Chinese chopsticks soup

What's under the hood

To look under the hood, that is, in the skull, imagine a starry sky. The stars on it are nerve cells or neurons. To solve a specific problem, nerve cells must communicate with each other or form neural connections. This can be thought of as constellations.

To solve any problem, for example, cycling, declaring a variable, using a toothbrush, our personal star map has its own constellations or neural connections.

Neural connections are needed to solve any problem.

When a person does something familiar, for example, picks up a spoon, types on a keyboard or shaves, the brain uses existing neural connections. Nerve cells bind to each other along familiar routes. Therefore, we eat soup or pedal the bike without hesitation. The brain is relaxed.

When a person does something new, for example, learns Python or tries to eat soup with Chinese chopsticks, the brain is forced to create new neural connections. Nerve impulses seem to pave new ways on the stellar map of the brain. These paths merge into new constellations. But before the formation of synapses, a nerve impulse is forced to try a huge number of options, fall tens of thousands of times into black holes and collide with cooled stars.

Synapse - a place of contact of neurons in which the exchange of nerve impulses occurs.

When we learn new things, the brain works in a focused mode. This is a less efficient and more energy-consuming mode of operation. To find a path and unite into constellations, a neuron sends nerve impulses to tens of thousands of false directions.

To create new connections (red), neurons are forced to send nerve impulses in false directions (yellow)

Do you already understand why it is difficult for us to study? The focused mode is energy-consuming, so the brain cannot maintain it for a long time. Fatigue, drowsiness, and even procrastination are protective reactions or brain traps. He wants to go back to relaxed mode, so he reminds us of social networks and tea.

Choose your favorite profession

I know for myself: if you learn what you don’t like, nothing good will come of it. The first time I felt it at the university, and the second time - when I tried to force myself to learn how to program. I do not quit now, but it’s hard to do it. And the reason is only one and very simple: I do not like this activity.

If you can find a profession that you like, new knowledge will be something akin to a small holiday and you really want to learn.

Make a plan

Random movement is not always bad. If you are a genius or a creative person, then you can not read this article further. The only problem is that if you consider yourself a genius or a creative person, then you are neither one nor the other.

Without a plan, it is almost impossible to properly build the learning process. What should be included in the plan? Firstly, the time you are willing to spend every day on training. Needless to say, there is practically no point in learning 5 minutes a day? I am inclined to ensure that the training takes no less than an hour, and you have to determine the exact dates yourself.

Secondly, the curriculum. If you study online, make a list of sources, books, sites, blogs that you will study. The main thing is to follow the plan. Do not miss a day, and when study becomes a habit, you will understand why it was necessary.

Keep a synopsis

I didn’t even know that it could be nice to keep a summary. If you are listening to lectures, then write a short retelling of the basic concepts in it. If you read books, write out quotes, statements, and definitions that you consider necessary.

Make a plan

It is not necessary to write an abstract by hand. I use Evernote, and it suits me absolutely everything. With the choice of tool you have to decide for yourself. My advice: try both methods. For several days, write a synopsis by hand, and then write it in some application. Which method allows you to better remember the material, more convenient, practical and faster? By answering these questions, you can make a choice.

Add practice

Want to learn how to program? Program.

Whatever profession you decide to study, you can find a way to practice it, even if you do not have the opportunity to get a job. For example, in marketing - study marketing cases, strategies of well-known companies, think about how you could improve the marketing of a particular company. In design - draw sites, logos, redo the appearance of famous services and sites. If you know how to do better, do it!

I gave an example of a profession in the IT field, but I think that no matter what you do, you can find a way to practice in this area.

Find professionals

Finding a person who understands the profession better than you, you can significantly accelerate your learning. Moreover, you do have the Internet, which means that you don’t even have to leave home to search.

Write emails to famous and eminent professionals and ask them questions. Do not be too intrusive, as such people are mostly very busy. But often they are open to dialogue and will be happy to help you with advice.

Do not overdo it

Fairly contradictory advice, but I could not help but mention it. I know many stories of prominent personalities who worked 8 hours a day. I don’t know how they succeeded, because after so much time, it’s easy to develop an aversion to learning and what you learn.

Try to find that thin line that allows you to do just as much so that it is productive and does not cause boredom.

Tips for the proper organization of the educational process

Tip one: get out of sight everything that distracts your attention

Do you know why professional billiards or golfers demand silence from the public? Yes, because practically unrealistic to concentratewhen everything around, including noise, distracts your attention!

Preparing for the exam, like any other educational process, is no different from playing billiards - if there are distractions (a TV, a guitar hanging on the wall, a game console - in short, everything that falls into your field of vision), then you will almost certainly will be distracted.

So, the key point for those who are often distracted is to create an external environment, the most conducive to learning. If for this you need to move the table to another place - move! No strength to resist the temptation in the form of a nearby TV? Cover it with something or transfer it!

Perhaps for this someone will need to do order on their desk, taking a minimalist approach as a basis. Sometimes the attention is diverted not only by the phone lying nearby, but also by chance the book turned out to be off topic.

You may be impressed by another situation - when your desk is littered with papers, books. Wherein it’s not at all necessary that you need silence - Some people work great with music, say, classical. The key to success is to make you comfortable!

Tip two: carefully choose a place to study

Approximately the same should be the approach to choosing a place for classes. It is clear that students living in a dormitory have little choice. But if you personally have the opportunity to choose, then, for example, the bedroom is far from the best placeto sit down for books.

In general, given a lot of distractions, some of which were listed above, even your home is far from always a suitable place for productive study. And if you are constantly distracted by homework.

The most obvious place to study that you can recommend is, of course, the library. However and there is not always calm (especially on the eve of exams). It turns out that finding a comfortable place to study is not such an easy task!

In fact, you just need to consider all the options. If the weather is favorable, you can get out into the park, find a free-standing bench, at a distance from noisy kids, where no one bothers you to bite the granite of science. Or you can, as an option, drop into a quiet cafe.

It is known that a low-level buzz, assembled from various voices (let's call it “classroom buzz”), is capable of encourage students to study. It is such a buzz that can stand in a cafe. Perhaps for you this is not the best option. Well, look for yours, but do not forget that study and bed are incompatible.

Tip three: select the material in which you "swim"

Not for nothing they say that from session to session students live happily. The fun ends and comes the most stressful time for the vast majority of students - knowledge test time, that is, the time for exams.

It was during these periods that many students were acutely short of time. As a rule, this results in the fact that it is not possible to prepare absolutely all questions for the exam. However, not all students use the time before the session rationally.

In fact, there is one secret that even in the last days before the session will allow you to prepare for the exam more effectively. The fact is that, with a large amount of material, many students barely have enough time to read it a couple of times.

This is not enough, especially when it comes to difficult moments. It is recommended that before re-reading write on paper a summary of the contents of each ticket. Perhaps the content of some questions should be divided into parts and its content should also be summarized.

When re-reading it, you should not concentrate on the material that you know well. Pay attention to those moments whose idea you could not put on paper in brief, and spend more time repeating these points.

The secrets of good study

Tip four: learn to plan

Planning is something that teachers constantly tell us, but something that is rarely taught. Yes, and whether they are - because they themselves try to strictly follow the curriculum, which, in fact, does not include the need to teach us how to learn!

That is why you must learn to plan yourself - this is an essential skill that will come in handy not only in further studies, but also in any job, and simply in your daily life.

By deliberately putting off the most difficult things for later, you yourself are well aware that spending your time irrationally. Start by making an entire weekly to-do list.

This simple event, which, although it does not look (at first glance) especially useful, will help you, in fact, rid your head of junk in the form of a to-do list. In addition, you will be able to visually evaluate the entire amount of work. Do not forget to put down the dates of execution!

Then it is worth highlighting the most complex and time-consuming tasks and tasks. When you do this, Scatter your daily worries for every day of the week, considering your workload on this particular day.

Tip five: study in a group with other students

Working in a group is a very useful and productive practice for any student. Of course, effectiveness can sometimes depend on what you are working on. Perhaps if you are studying the development of painting during the Renaissance, you will need a bottle of wine and privacy.

However, if your field of study is applied sciences (for example, medicine, mathematics, construction), then studying the material in a group, solving problems, and jointly searching for the right answers can be very effective.

This efficiency is due to the fact that the process of checking the material becomes more dynamic, attractive. There is an opportunity to ask questions, discuss difficult moments in a team, more correctly formulate answers.

Of course, technically you yourself are able to carry out the amount of work that is before you. However, in this case, the likelihood of not paying attention to their weaknesses, not feeling those moments in which you swim, increases.

There is also such a negative point as the monotony of the process of independent study of the material. If you want to avoid this, then group exercises are what you need. Change the format of the study and perhaps you will become better at memorizing the material.

Tip six: take regular breaks

The painstaking work on the material gives its obvious results. However, the proximity of exams amid a number of current problems presses students, forcing many of them to literally fence themselves off from the outside world with an iron curtain.

Some belong to this period with excessive fanaticism - they close for several days in their room, taking small breaks just to take a nap, go to the toilet or go to the kitchen for a sandwich. Others refuse to sleep at all.

This is the wrong tactic! Breaks on a regular basis are mandatory. After all, it was not without reason that a lot of research was carried out that proved that, if you regularly give your brain time to relax, then the efficiency of assimilation of the material will increase significantly.

You will be able to absorb more material and do it faster, your opportunities will have a motivational effect on you, which will only increase your productivity. Of course, the point is not that you, having studied for 15 minutes, then spent three hours reviewing several episodes of the Game of Thrones.

But to work with the textbook for two hours, and then interrupt to view one series of “Interns” or some other easy and short comedy - this is it. A similar approach gives rest to the prefrontal cortex and allows you not to stop at difficult moments.

How to study well? Tips

Tip seven: feed your brain, not your stomach

Deficit times have long sunk into oblivion. This means that there is no need to eat one tea, saving on the essentials - on those resources that allow you to not only exist, but work efficiently by assimilating material.

We are talking about good nutrition. Of course, when inspiration has taken possession of you, it’s quite difficult to break even to make yourself a regular sandwich or order pizza. At this moment, we ignore the indignant urges of our stomach.

However, this is not worth doing, because ultimately not only the stomach, but also your brain suffers from such unconsciousness, and, therefore, your student productivity is declining. Do not reinvent the wheel: science has long recognized the inextricable link between diet and cognitive functioning of the brain.

The latter needs food no less (or even more!) Of the stomach. And here you should not try to deceive him with ordinary sandwiches with sausage and cheese, hamburgers from the nearest eatery, or bars of chocolate.

During the period of active study, when our brain works, as they say, at the limit, he needs special food! That is why fruits, vegetables and nuts must be present in your diet - this is at least!

Tip eight: do not let yourself dry!

In fact, you must always have a bottle of clean drinking water with you. Let her be bright and eye-catching - This is one of the items on your table that you should periodically be distracted by.

Do not wait until you feel very thirsty. As soon as your lips dry out a little - drink a sip of water, if you went to the toilet and noticed the dark color of your urine - drink water. Moreover, these are two late signs of dehydration!

Also try to avoid the temptation to consume coffee or caffeinated drinks constantly. All kinds of energy are also a disastrous option! High levels of sugar and caffeine increase blood pressure, which ultimately reduces your productivity (not to mention the health risks!).

Tip nine: use effective material storage techniques

Monotony and the need for constant study - this is what can negate the effectiveness of any educational process. But are these rules for the assimilation of material that many consider the only right to be so firm?

In fact, everything is far from being so sad and hopeless. The simplest, but at the same time the most effective way is not just to read the material to yourself, but to shift at least part of it onto paper, sometimes using associative images.

For example, you can bind some postulates and formulas to certain characters or words. When this happens development of mnemonic memory, mnemonics are polished, making it easy to memorize much more material in a shorter time.

Of course, this approach will require more time from you, but your goal is not to reduce the training time, but to use it more productively. One of these tricks is writing cheat sheets. No need to Xeri, no need to print - you need to rewrite the material with your own hand. Then it will be good.

Another useful secret is to repeat the memorized material in your own words. Cramming maybe will give you a chance to pass an exam or a test. However, the use of mindless memorization will not be enough, as this knowledge quickly disappears.

Tip ten: give yourself the right installation

In any case, much has been said about the benefits of positive thinking. And the learning process is one of those activities that requires you to have the right attitude. You simply have to convince yourself that you are mentally prepared to master the material of any complexity.

When there is a need to sit down in a textbook in order to master the next difficult chapter, you should not behave as if Calvary awaits you! Of course, sometimes it is very difficult to give your brain the necessary setting.

If you feel a breakdown, the chances that you can learn the material through force are small. However worth learning manage your mood and state of mind. Stop bad thoughts and a defeatist mood. Tell yourself: "I will learn this material and be sure to pass an exam!".

Be inspired by your own victories and do not focus on your defeats, because the latter are a temporary problem. You are quite capable of overcoming any difficulties, and even more so to master some material there!

You should also not compare yourself with other, more successful students, tuning in to the idea that "you can never do that." Cast away emotions, follow all the above rules, and the time when you succeed, will not keep you waiting!

Why do we use the brain incorrectly

Another good news: a relaxed brain is just as important and useful for learning and solving applied problems as focused. That is, in the relaxation mode, the brain does not drain, but works. The beauty is that this happens without active efforts on our part.

This is easiest to understand by the example of skills. Imagine a person learning to knit. First, he assimilates the theory and acquires knowledge. He knows how to knit, but does not know how to do it. Then a man picks up knitting needles and knits several rows. Now he knows how to knit. But in order to make each loop, he must concentrate. When a person ties 100 thousand rows, he will be able to knit like your grandmother: looking at the TV screen or even half asleep.

Skill is an automatic skill. A beginner knows how to knit. To make a loop, his brain must focus and work in an energy-intensive mode. Grandmother has a knitting skill. She can knit a sweater without focusing on loops and rows. Her brain works in a relaxed mode. Therefore, the grandmother thinks about a sweater, and not about the movements of the knitting needles.

While knitting, grandmother does not need to strain and constantly think about loops

Thinking that you can learn something new only in focused mode, you are misusing your brain. In order to learn effectively, as well as for successful daily activities, both modes of operation are important.

In focused mode, you will learn new facts and gain skills. In a relaxed mode, you comprehend information, get a holistic picture and consolidate skills. Moreover, the brain generates new ideas when it works in defocused mode.

How Dali Defocused

The famous surrealist artist Salvador Dali used an interesting technique to search for ideas for paintings. He sat in a comfortable chair, relaxed and closed his eyes. In his hand he held a bunch of keys. Dali was drowning half asleep, his body was relaxing.

At some point, the hand released the keys, and the loud sound from their fall woke the artist. He immediately began to create, so as not to forget the ideas received in the state between sleep and wakefulness. The inventor Thomas Edison used the same technique.

Salvador Dali forced the transition from focused to relaxed brain

What is common between memory and weightlifting muscles

The good news is number three: memory can be trained. In this way, she looks like weightlifter muscles. But you need to train correctly. Memory and muscles cannot be developed in a day or in a week. Just do not remember about synthol pitching and psychostimulants. These are exceptions, therefore they confirm the rules.

Muscle strength builds up gradually

Human memory can be compared to computer memory. Like the iron assistants, we have RAM. Its volume is limited: according to the latest data, up to four blocks of information are effectively kept in it.

We have a long-term memory. Colossal amounts of information are stored on a conventional hard drive. We recall some information effortlessly. A person knows the address of his house very well, although he does not keep this information in RAM. But he regularly turns to the department of the brain in which the address is stored. For example, this happens when he calls a taxi or orders pizza.

We recall some information with effort. What is the last name of the girl you pulled the braid in first grade? What was the name of the teacher in kindergarten? A person rarely addresses the brain with this information, so the brain must make an effort to find ways to access the data.

We forget most of the information. It is not permanently erased, but stored in the far corners of our “hard drive”. But the brain does not know the paths to this data, since it never accesses it.

By the way, the proverb “the mind is ward, but the key is lost” very well describes the principle of the long-term memory. If the brain does not know the key to the desired memory department, the data in it will remain inaccessible.

To effectively learn and remember new information, you need to teach the brain to find ways to the desired departments of long-term memory. It is enough to regularly load information into RAM. That is, in one way or another use and repeat information.

Correctly use software and take care of hard

This is how you can summarize the conversation about effective learning. Healthy sleep, proper nutrition and physical activity are necessary so that the brain does not slow down and works in the mode laid down by nature and parents.

To learn effectively, it is important to let the brain focus and relax. Information repetition and practice form and reinforce new neural connections. The deductive method and metaphors will help move from the general to the particular and not lose the forest behind the trees.

Successful training! By the way, if you want to share secrets and chips that help you quickly learn new things, write in the comments.

Not a magician read a lot of letters.

You can eat an elephant piece by piece in a sitting)

Here are some tips from the Headfist series books:
HERE YOU CAN MAKE YOUR BRAIN WORK:
Listen to your brain and find out what works for you and what doesn't. Try new tricks
1. Take your time. The longer you understand, the less you will need to remember.
Just reading is not enough. stop and think. When a question is asked in a book, do not go straight to the answer.
IMAGINE SOMETHING REALLY ASKING YOU A QUESTION. THE DEEPER YOU MAKE YOUR BRAIN TO UNDERSTAND IN MATERIAL, the more chances to LEARN and TO REMEMBER.

2. Perform tasks, write your notes
We have given you tasks, but if we
decided them for you, it would be like
someone else goes to training instead of you.
And don't just look at the exercises. Use a pencil. There are many
evidence that physical activity in the process of training improves the quality of training.
Just reading is not enough. Stop and think. When a question is asked in a book, do not go straight to the answer. Imagine someone
really asks you a question. Deeper you
make your brain go deeper into the material
more likely to learn and remember.

3. Read the sections - These are not stupid questions.
That is, read them all. These are not additional frames, they are part of the main
material! Do not miss them.

4. Let the book be the last one read before going to bed. Do not read after anything complicated
Part of the training (especially the transfer to long-term memory) occurs after you
closed the book. Your brain needs time
on your own, additional processing.
If you upload it with something new during
of this processing, part of what you just
learned to be lost.

5. Speak what you read aloud.
A conversation activates another part of the brain. If a
are you trying to understand something or increase your
chance to remember it later, say it
aloud. Better yet, try to explain it.
out loud to someone else. You will learn much
faster and you may have ideas that
did not occur when you read the book.

6. Drink water, plenty of water
The brain works better when there is enough fluid in the body.

7. listen to your brain
Make sure that the brain does not overload. If you feel that you have ceased to perceive the text or began to forget what you just read, then it's time to take a BREAK. When you reach a certain point, you won’t be able to learn faster, trying to remember even more,
just harm the learning process.

8. FEEL something your brain needs to know that learning has
value to you. Get involved in the story.
Create your own captions for the images. Sighing from a bad joke anyway
better than not feeling anything at all.

9. Write a LOT of code
There is only one way to learn how to program in Python: write a lot of code.
And this is what you should do throughout the book. Programming is
skill, and the only way to develop this
skill is practice. We will give you enough
many practical exercises: in each chapter
there are exercises that offer you
to solve a task. Do not miss them: big
part of the training happens then
when you do the exercises. We give a solution to each task - do not be afraid
look there if stuck! (Very easy
get stuck because of some little things.) But try to solve this problem yourself,
before you peep at the solution. And of course make it work before
continue reading.

What not to do

Many people who want to learn something usually ask questions about how to learn something. How to quickly learn English, how to quickly learn speed reading, how to quickly learn how to play the guitar? Of course, you can learn all this quickly, but the thing is this: as a rule, such people never begin to study anything, because they believe that a specific day will come in which they can tell themselves that they learned something that. Training is an ongoing process.

You have probably heard many times that it is simply impossible to learn any language in view of its constant change. You can quickly climb the mountain from the rules and spelling, this is really possible, but then a very unpleasant thing happens - either you think that the subsequent study of the language will come by itself, or you will be disappointed because you understand that it is impossible to fully learn the language.

You see your result, be proud of it, but at that very moment there is complete apathy, telling you that there are still so many unknown words and idioms to learn, and you don’t even know what to take. When you start to think that you already understand the taste of the language, a situation will surely arise that will indicate to you that this is not so. The topic of language learning is the most painful, because it is relevant, but most importantly - the problems are clearly visible.

No need to take it all at once. In today's world, a huge amount of information that cannot be remembered, a large number of skills. And let's be honest, everything is impossible to learn. Therefore, first of all, you must understand who you are and what you want, and what skills will help you with this. Yes, we are not talking about learning speed, but about expediency, but this point is extremely important. Everyone wants to learn here and now five new skills, but does not undertake any of them.

Do not do nonsense. Of course, everyone is interested in trying something new for themselves, but before that, at least think a little about how necessary and important it is for you. You can succumb to emotions and start learning to play the guitar, but what if you are not interested in music at all? But such an example is by no means sucked from the finger, such people exist.

We all must understand that in order to learn a certain skill, this usually requires at least a month, or even from a year to three. There are people who learn Spanish, but they don’t even want to study the history of Spain, even go there. These people are engaged in nonsense, arguing that each person should have some special skill. No one in the company knows Spanish, but he knows. And this is considered an argument.

Why do some learn fast, others slow?

There are several reasons. People who find learning easy They know what they want from life. Any skill they learn every day receives confirmation that it is important to them. Such people study English, and besides it, read the history of English-speaking countries, are interested in culture, literature, they plan trips to these countries. For them, the allotted hour in English is not limited to sixty minutes, they are always on this wave. Finally, weave the learned skill into your life - This is ideal for learning anything.

Learn to cook, ask people to whom you come to visit how they prepared this dish. It is not necessary now to chat about cooking for days, just after completing the formal part of the training, do not forget about the skill. If you are devoted to learning the skill an hour a day, and the rest of the time you are sick of it, it is not yours.

And if you need to learn the skill, make a huge long list of benefits that you will get when you learn it. Reread it constantly, supplement it. Read it before training and right after. Always remember how this skill is important to you, otherwise it will become your burden, but you still need to learn. Imagine that every day you walk along the alley and constantly stumble over the same stone. And after a month there are ten of these stones. Is it possible to admire the weather while walking along the alley, when the fear of stumbling constantly sits inside? They will not become smaller, the number of stones will only grow.

These people achieve excellence in every aspect of the skill. They do not learn for the sake of someone; they do it for themselves. If you, after your sleeves, relate to irregular verbs of the English language, and everything else is interesting for you to learn, then what progress can we talk about? Yes, pull yourself together, set aside even a couple of days and learn these verbs so that you never again think about them. Otherwise, they will emerge in the consciousness and subconscious and destroy your confidence. How nice to know that you have learned the most complicated and unpleasant rule and now you can focus on something easy.

These people have a living example before their eyes. They see and communicate with people who have learned this skill and can help sort it out. Forums are good, but you won’t get so many quick answers there, and in live mode you can get a lot of energy and motivate yourself with a living example.

They constantly ask themselves the right questions. It is extremely important in any training to study the microcosm and macrocosm, to see the details and the big picture. Studying a rule, chords or text, you need to ask yourself from time to time: “What am I doing now? And how will this help me in the global learning of the skill? ” Получив ответ, вы проясняете цель, начинаете дышать свободно. Когда вы учитесь играть на гитаре, всегда помните о том, зачем вы это делаете — вы хотите писать собственные песни. Часто случается ситуация, когда человек, учащийся игре на гитаре, может прийти в ступор и посмотреть на себя со стороны — какой-то человек с деревянной палкой трет пальцы о никель.At such moments, the ability to learn decreases several times. Ask yourself: “What am I doing now in a global sense?”

They are planning. It seems boring. Even when there is interest in learning a skill, you just want to take it and learn it; you don’t want to think. Planning is good because it allows you to think, as well as see the whole picture.

Instant practice

If you picked up a self-instruction manual (on screenwriting, cooking, memory development), don’t take it “just read”, do not engage in self-deception. When you read a book about screenwriting and the first chapter in it about creating a character, take and create a character right there. If you read a book about the development of memory, immediately bring it to life. Why waste time reading when you can take and translate the advice in the book here and now. If you read the tutorial and did nothing in practice, you wasted time. You should understand this simple thing here and now, otherwise the read books and tips will remain just a theory.

Everyday practice

Of course, it’s difficult to allocate time every day for dozens of skills, well, don’t take it all at once. Allocate at least 30 minutes a day, but it really should be every day. The body must accustom itself to a new unusual feeling of getting out of the comfort zone, because any novelty for your brain is this very way out.

What to learn

Learn only what attracts you, what attracted you for a long time, because you will have to study for a relatively long time. Think about your values, who you are and what you want to achieve in life, and then answer the question what skills do you need to do this. If you work with people and you like it, you just need to study the psychology and skills of influencing people. There are people who like to communicate, but they do not progress in communication, cannot achieve what they would like.

Do you like music Think again and answer the question - do you really like the music? Is that what makes you feel alive and real? Then start making music. Only in this case you will succeed. Even if you have a completely different profession, you will come to your goal.

If you like fine art, you are sure to learn it. You may not be a genius, but you can learn any skill at a good level, even if "you have no talent."

Do you like computer games? Yes, it’s incredibly hard to become a programmer, but you can write reviews, create your own YouTube channel and comment on games.

Boost your cognitive abilities

Despite the fact that this item is not the first, it is, in truth, a key one. Developing memory, you become able to remember more important information, remember forgotten, begin to show their abilities in creative thinking (these are related things). When you learn to be attentive and focused, you will stop being distracted and will be able to learn much more than before.

You will be able to notice things that you have not seen before, grasp the intonation of the interlocutor, understand the taste of food and read faster. This is all your support, which will help you learn to learn and do it faster (if this is your goal).

You probably know people who grasp everything on the fly and at the same time they cannot be called particularly well-read and smart. These people, from birth or from childhood, have developed precisely cognitive skills. They are able to notice, remember and realize more than others. They remember something faster, they can instantly come up with an unusual association for any word. And yes, their most important advantage is that they learn more easily than other people. True, many of them do not use this gift. What is not suffered is rarely of value. But if you increase your cognitive abilities, it will be worth your while.

What is great in cognitive abilities is that raising one increases the other. One memory training can work wonders with your brain.

21st century ideal for learning

With the Internet, you can learn almost any skill. Of course, if you do not want to learn how to operate people (and even then this is a profession, and we are talking about skills). For many other occasions, there are thousands of books, articles, and related sites. One YouTube is enough for a lifetime. Google has already digitized 30 million books, world famous universities do the same and put them in the public domain, the Coursera web service offers free video courses to everyone.

Always remember that you are learning something only for yourself. And if you, through the sleeves, reacted to one aspect of the skill, thinking that you had deceived someone, you deceived yourself. Do not engage in self-deception, perfect any aspect and be proud of yourself for it.

What do you think, how else can you learn to learn? Leave your comments.
