Poultry Farm Business Plan

A few years ago, a successful business lady, Irina Petrova, could not have imagined that her desire to provide her family with quality meat products would grow into a profession and begin to generate income. But in just five years, Irina managed not only to establish quail production, but also to gain regular customers and increase the range of goods offered. Now Irina not only sells meat, but also grows about 35 thousand chicks - quails, turkeys and ducks for sale every season.

Part one. Start.

Irina is happy to tell the story of her family - her great-great-grandfather was a noble farmer. He lived in Samara, owned a large household, but with the beginning of the “dispossession program” he had to leave everything in Samara and move to Lipetsk, where he started from scratch.

Almost the same situation was with Irina - after the birth of her second child, she had a question with milk: the mother didn’t have enough milk for the mother, chemically correct formulations Irina didn’t want to feed the baby, and this left the option to buy goat’s milk from the “familiar grandmother” for the child.

Everything was wonderful until Irina came to her grandmother a little earlier than usual time and did not see in what conditions a “clean” goat is kept. After that, Irina stopped buying milk from strangers, and suggested that the family get her own goat.

Either Irina’s special talent was manifested, or agricultural roots leapt, but after the goat Irina had chickens, chickens, broilers. At first, there was barely enough food for his family, but the poultry and livestock yard was growing, there was more and more food, Irina at first treated friends and acquaintances, then acquaintances of acquaintances began to come to her, in the end absolutely unfamiliar people who learned about quality and tasty began to turn to her. product.

At this very moment, Irina Petrova ventured to turn to her historical roots and created her own farm.

Part two. Building.

The final decision to engage in agriculture was formed in the head and soul of Irina in 2007. Having studied a large amount of literature, re-read hundreds of topics on forums, familiarized with the experience of other people, Ira chose a quail farm as the basis of her business plan. Quails were chosen for a reason - these birds take up little space, are not particularly demanding on living and eating conditions and grow stably well.

Irina did not begin to start a business with a small object. It is worth noting that Ira lives with her family outside the city, so she immediately began construction of a completely new building with an area of 150 square meters.

Everything in the new building was equipped with the latest technology - tiled, easy to clean and washable surfaces, clean running water, a special filter system for birds, properly calculated powerful ventilation. Construction was entrusted to real experts in the field of poultry construction. Cages and brooders (rooms for newly hatched chicks) were made by a familiar cell manufacturing specialist. Then incubators were purchased and installed.

The entire period of construction and equipment of the premises lasted about a year. About 1 million rubles were spent on this, which Irina received from the sale of real estate.

In 2009, Irina bought 8 thousand quails, registered as a private entrepreneur and started working.

Part three. Technology and development.

Nestling is a business that, although it only lasts a few months, feeds a businessman all year. Initially, Irina worked according to the “bred chicks - made an announcement” scheme, over the years this scheme has significantly changed - Irina works “on order”.

Now, at the end of January-beginning of February, a line of people line up on Petrova’s website, writing down their wishes for the number of chicks they want to purchase, in the assortment of quail, geese, turkeys, etc. Someone constantly lives outside the city, but does not want to feed the bird all winter, and someone moves to the country for the summer and wants to grow meat for his family on his own.

Irina gives chicks to clients only after the birds have dried in brooders, get on their feet, grow up, drink vitamins, etc. Farm chickens are sold only in spring, and the rest of the time they sell eggs and meat.

At some point, laying hens were also sold at Irina’s farm, but the problem with the hens is that they are not profitable. Chicken starts to hatch in 4-5 months, and chicken feed during this period is so expensive that no one wants to buy them: you have to either lower the price or raise the cheapest and most “uninteresting” breed.

Where to get money to start your own business? It is this problem that 95% of beginning entrepreneurs face! In the article "Where to get money for a business" we revealed the most relevant ways to get start-up capital for an entrepreneur. We also recommend that you carefully study the results of our experiment in exchange earnings: "see the results of the experiment"

After the quail business began to generate income, Irina began to consider other birds for breeding. It turned out that few farmers are breeding turkey.

The first month the turkey is very difficult to go out - the chickens are incredibly sensitive both to temperature extremes, and to the composition of the feed, vitamins, etc. Ira managed to get a hand in and achieve a technology in which only 7% of the loss of chicks is laid. For other types of birds - quails or hens - this indicator does not exceed 3-5%, but since the losses are predicted, Irina puts them in the cost of the chicks and compensates for their costs.

Now the lady farmer does not plan to go to the shelves of large stores, such as Auchan or the Alphabet of Taste, with her products, then certification for the products of her company is not required. To work with small institutions, such as kindergartens, schools, private individuals, a certificate from an accredited veterinarian who checks products every five days and issues certificates is enough.

Working with online stores also turned out to be disadvantageous - all the problems with the untimely sale of goods fall on the farmer, although the goods often disappear precisely because of the sellers.

As a private entrepreneur, Irina is always responsible for the quality of products, and the method of "direct sales" avoids damage to the goods in warehouses. Often, buyers themselves come to the mistress and take their purchases.

If we consider the entire production technology, it is worth noting that the birds on the farm are divided into three subtypes: chickens, parent flocks and repair flocks. The parent flock is engaged in the production of eggs for the incubator, the chickens are for sale, and the repair flock “sits” on the bench, waiting for the situation when something happens to the parent flock.

Irina notes that in no case it is impossible to save on the purchase of initial samples of eggs. Eggs need to be bought only with veterinary certification and preferably from different sellers so that the hatched birds have different blood, which, when crossed, will give the best result.

You can not save both on eggs and on bird food. Some unscrupulous producers sell food that has been treated with poisons and chemicals, which negatively affects the bird and can cause its illness or death. Irina does not abuse compound feeds, preparing mixes for feeding independently. Guided by her own knowledge, she makes separately mixtures for the parent herd, for chickens, for the repair herd.

Having tested several types of incubators (the business began with two incubators for 290 eggs, then an incubator for 500 eggs appeared, for a thousand, and a unit for 4000 eggs was recently bought), Irina came to the conclusion that there was no need to chase foreign technologies in this business. Foreign ones differ from domestic incubators in particular difficulties in finding components, lack of trained personnel and constant worries “what will happen if the incubator breaks?”.

For domestic-made incubators, it is easy to find both a repair specialist and components for performing repairs. Once, Irina managed to save a fully loaded incubator from egg spoilage, since the specialists were there already 3 hours after calling the service desk.

Irina's farm is always clean - tiled surfaces are sanitized daily, incubators and broilers are treated with ultraviolet lamps, etc.

Part Four Profit

Irina says that the business began to generate income quickly enough. In the first year, the entrepreneur worked to zero, and then the income line began to constantly go up.

In different months of the year, the farm brings a different amount of funds - once people buy in large numbers like chicks, once they buy meat, and in some months Irina is forced to invest all earned money in eggs for an incubator, but Irina’s monthly income is 50-60 thousand rubles .

Part Five Future plans

Irina’s seasonal plans practically do not change every year - at the end of the summer reduce the repair herd, by winter - give out a maximum of meat for sale, leaving the parent and repair herd in the minimum composition, etc.

The global plans are as follows - Irina plans to expand the economy, dreams of opening a dumpling production workshop, and also dreams of her own restaurant with food of her own production.

We wish Irina to make all her dreams come true as soon as possible.

1. Brief Investment Memorandum

Every year the number of people who want to lead a healthy lifestyle is increasing. It involves a healthy diet that is based on quality, fresh produce. Perishable foods such as eggs and meat are best bought from local producers. In this regard, the relevance of opening poultry farms in various regions in our country is very high.

In recent years, poultry imports to our country have been declining; accordingly, demand is growing, which can be covered by our own production. The import of foreign poultry is reduced, firstly, due to the fact that buyers do not want to buy such meat, knowing that in order to ensure long-term transportation, drugs are used, and, secondly, due to the sanctions imposed on foreign suppliers in recent years.

The attractiveness of opening a farm is also in the fact that the state provides subsidies for opening a poultry farm and benefits for farms (for example, exemption from personal income tax). There are also quite a few regional programs that are aimed at supporting farmers. For example, citizens who have expressed a desire to conduct peasant farms and who have defended their projects (business plans) are provided with land plots from agricultural land in accordance with the Land Code of the Russian Federation and the Federal Law "On Peasant (Farm) Farming."

To organize a profitable poultry farm, 1,500 chicken heads (500 laying hens and 1,000 broilers, respectively), a land plot with a building of 150 m2, and a staff of 3 people will be required.

Each month, laying hens will bring a total of 10,000 eggs, and the sale of meat of 1,000 hens will also be organized. Products need to be sold in a short time due to the fact that they belong to the category of perishable goods, as well as pay attention to transportation, which requires certain temperature conditions. Over time, you can increase the number of hens, while the monthly profit will also increase.

Amount of initial investment 880 000 rubles.

Break-even point is reached. On the second month of work.

Payback period 12 months.

Average net profit 90 000 rubles.

2. Description of the business, product or service

In order for the poultry farm to be cost-effective, state support is needed. In this business plan, the poultry farm will purchase special feed. prices and rent land with premises at a reduced price. In addition, it is worth noting that farms are usually located far from the city, in a rural settlement, where the rental price is much lower. Agricultural land can be rented from the state for free by building on it your own birdhouse. For 1500 heads of chickens, the premises should be at least 150 sq.m., since no more than 10 hens should be located on one square meter. Space savings can be achieved by acquiring three or five tier battery cells. A big plus of this equipment is that the cages are already equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable keeping of the bird - nipple drinkers, feeders and a collection egg. On the territory of the poultry farm, a site for walking birds is also needed.

There are two main areas in the cultivation of chicken - meat and egg. For this, young chickens of various breeds are purchased.

So, such breeds as Cross, Hyssex, Izobraun, Tetra SL belong to egg hens. They are able to lay up to 315 eggs per year (but, on average, 20 eggs per month). This category of birds is quite mobile, up to 150 grams of grain per day goes to one chicken, while it is necessary to add feed additives and vitamins.

For the meat sector, it is necessary to purchase 1000 broiler chicks. They reach their maximum weight of 2.5 kilograms approximately seven weeks after birth. The most popular breeds are the Cornish, Brama, and Kokhinkhin breeds.

It is also necessary to purchase males, given that eleven hens will optimally have one rooster.

After a couple generations of laying hens are raised, you will need an incubator - an apparatus for artificially removing young birds from eggs. The use of such an apparatus is connected with the fact that it is unprofitable to buy new chicks each time. However, for the chicks it is necessary to provide a separate room in which the air temperature will be at least 29 degrees, while for adults it is not more than 18 degrees. Usually, additional heating is due to infrared lamps.

The poultry farm will work around the clock (light, heating), however, workers will be on its territory from 8.00 to 20.00.

3. Description of the market

In this business, sales play a key role. Even if all the technologies are followed, they got the maximum number of eggs and meat, that is, the probability of not selling it. In addition, the products are perishable, so you need to decide how the sales will be organized, even before you receive the finished product.

The main areas of implementation will be:

  • Outlets. Selling at markets and fairs. The main target category will be middle-income people, but people with high incomes will buy the recommended quality products. A point of sale can be organized by yourself, or you can give products to entrepreneurs-traders for sale. You can participate in fairs on your own, as they are not often held.
  • To shops and retail chains. Usually on the shelves are presented the products of large poultry farms, the price of which is lower than farm products. However, individual stores can take farm products for sale and check demand for it. If customers are interested in the products, the store or chain can sign a long-term supply contract.
  • To individuals interested in healthy eating. Usually, sales are carried out according to the word of mouth method, when people begin to come to the farm themselves, and with increased demand it is possible to arrange deliveries once a week.
  • Restaurants and cafes. Work on deliveries is carried out directly with the head, chef or administrator of institutions. Often it is more profitable for restaurants and cafes to buy meat and eggs directly from producers than from a reseller, so sales contracts can be long-term.

Advantages and disadvantages of the poultry farm are shown in the table:

Strengths of the project:

Project weaknesses:

  • Small investment
  • Quality products,

  • High competition in the market,
  • Small profit
  • Inability to find outlets

Project Features:

Threats to the project:

  • The opening of several farms in various areas of the region,
  • Organization of an online store
  • Delivery Organization
  • Sale of young
  • Conclusion of agreements with large retail chains

  • Cancellation of privileges for agricultural enterprises
  • Lack of workers
  • The threat of detection and spread of animal disease

4. Sales and marketing

The farm itself does not have much need to invest heavily in advertising, because the main task will be to find outlets that put the goods on the counter or serve the finished products to visitors. However, to search for outlets you need to conduct a number of marketing campaigns, especially in the first months of work:

  • Run an advertisement for selling meat and eggs on various sites such as Avito.
  • Post an announcement in nearby villages on poles and in specially designated places.
  • Tell as many friends as you can about opening a farm.
  • Create an advertisement for the sale of farm products in social networks.

  • The stage of registration and obtaining permits. First you need to choose the legal form. The best option for the farm would be the creation of a peasant farm (IP), which gives the right to apply the taxation system of the Unified Agricultural Taxes (tax at which is 6% of the proceeds), as well as the right to participate in state support programs and to receive subsidies. The main types of OKVED will be: 10.12.1- “Production of chilled poultry meat”, 01.47.2 - “Production of poultry eggs”. Next, sanitary permits should be obtained by providing a number of documents to the SES.
  • The second stage will be the selection of land and premises. If the poultry farm is located on its own site, then you need to pay attention to whether the land is agricultural. The room must be equipped in accordance with all standards (temperature conditions, required area).
  • Search for suppliers to buy young animals. The breed, egg production and health of future generations of birds will depend on the selected chicks. The seller must provide a veterinary certificate and certificate of conformity.
  • The fourth step will be the recruitment of staff and the opening of a poultry farm. It should be borne in mind that in the first month of work, the revenue will be zero, due to the fact that the chicks will not bring eggs, and broilers will not grow up to the right age.
  • The next step will be to find outlets and organize pre-sales.
  • As soon as the birds have reached the required ages, the poultry farm can be considered open, and it is worth remembering that you must obtain veterinary certificates for products before selling.

6. Organizational structure

To organize the work of the poultry farm, a director is required who will be responsible for all areas of work. Most often, the director is the owner of the farm, who understands the cultivation of chickens and has already had experience. If the director is a person from the outside, then he needs to offer a salary and bonus part of the salary.

The duties of the director will include raising chickens in the incubator, searching for suppliers and distribution channels, staff training and farm development.

All the auxiliary work will be carried out by handymen. Such work does not require special training and education. The level of wages will be low, since work in rural areas, on average, is estimated lower than in the city. The main responsibilities will be organization of cleanliness on the farm, providing birds with feed and water, monitoring temperature conditions, as well as protecting the territory. There will be two laborers on the staffing table, with a 2/2 working mode from 8:00 to 20:00.

Accounting will work remotely, for greater savings, you can use the services of accounting firms.

7. Financial plan

Investment costs for opening this business are 879,400 rubles.

The full list of investments for opening a poultry farm is presented in the table:

Opening Investments

Registration, including obtaining all permissions

Rent at the time of repair

879 400

The main expenses will be the purchase of equipment for the organization of a poultry farm. So, the cost of one cage for 100 chickens will vary at the level of 35,000-600,000 rubles, depending on the manufacturer, materials and additional functions. You can engage in breeding chickens in a classic way without the use of cages, but then it will be harder to follow growing technologies, and the room should be large.

The main monthly costs include payroll and the purchase of feed and vitamins. Since the state offers farmers to receive subsidies for feed, their costs will be significantly lower than market prices.

The room requires round-the-clock use, therefore, in monthly costs, utility services will be an important item. The general list of expenses is presented in the Table:

How to organize a poultry farm

  • First of all. Recently, a poultry business has become a profitable business.
  • Secondly. The need for both meat and eggs has been successful simply because the increased use of various methods of their use in the development of new products.

This type of market usually ranges from butchers, food processing plants, hotels, restaurants, the local market, or even sales to neighbors.

Why run a chicken farm?

The first reason to start your own poultry farm is that it can help a lot in reducing family expenses when it comes to specific foods. It is also a good way to fill in the gaps that cannot be covered by regular salaries.

Family integration can be successfully achieved! Since the tasks are divided equally between family members. And finally, since the poultry farm is located right in the backyard, you can easily visit it according to the schedule that suits you best.

The first steps

It will be useful if you ask a few questions in hotels and restaurants. For example, you will learn how they receive their stocks, and ask if your products can be included in their menus.

Start a good relationship with the butchers. And ask your friends if they have connections with a market that needs supplies.

Types of Chicken.

Now that you know the market with which you will deal, it's time to choose a specific quantity, as well as the type of chickens that will be needed for a home farm. In case you choose a market that needs eggs? It will be advisable to breed chickens of egg-bearing breeds.

If the market goal is more interested in meat, you will need chicken of meat breeds. There are chickens that produce meat better than eggs, and vice versa.

The room.

Another thing you should not lose sight of. This is an accessible space in the poultry yard. This will be your guide when choosing the size of the chicken house you will be building.

To prevent it from being crowded, visit other farms to better determine the size of the room.

What the law says

When compiling a business plan for a poultry farm for 1000 chickens, you should include a section on registering business activities in it. Since the breeding of a large number of birds is carried out for commercial purposes, problems may arise without formalizing a business in the process of its implementation. They will lead to financial losses and to forced closure of the peasant farm.

It is not enough to register peasant farms, because in order to obtain permission to start work from authorized bodies, it is necessary to change the status of land to a commercial category. Implementation of the procedure is possible only if the land object is located at a distance of 300 meters from the nearest residential buildings, since such norms are reflected in legal acts.

In case of difficulties with land registration, it is recommended to organize activities as a personal subsidiary farm.

At the same time, it is not recommended to increase the population of over 1000 birds, since waste from their livelihoods can cause conflicts with neighbors who have the right to complain to authorized bodies about unpleasant odors. According to the complaint, the responsible specialists will have to go to the farmer and assess the conformity of the parameters of his farm with private household or peasant farms, and in case of inconsistencies take measures to close it.

Where to get money for opening a farm

To open a poultry farm, considerable investments in business are necessary. What to do if a person has a desire to do his own thing, but there is no financial opportunity to organize it?

In the absence of start-up capital, it is recommended to use one of the well-known and sought-after ways to attract resources.

The state is implementing a program to support farmers, offering them up to 2,000,000 rubles for the development of peasant farming. Under the state support program for start-up entrepreneurs, you can count on an amount of 350,000 rubles. Some banking institutions provide soft loans for the development of agricultural enterprises at 12 annual interest.

How to open a chicken farm from scratch

Before purchasing chickens, it is recommended to determine their number. At the same time, one should focus not only on their financial capabilities and the area of the premises for birds, but also on potential distribution channels. Without planning it is not worth starting an activity, because it will be doomed to failure in advance. With a content of 1000 laying hens, expect 800 daily eggs from them. Several ways of selling products should be considered:

  • exit trade from the car in specially equipped places for these purposes,
  • delivery of products to catering facilities, such as cafes, canteens and restaurants,
  • arrangement for regular delivery with grocery machines and small outlets.

When selling eggs or transferring them for sale, the farmer must have a veterinary certificate attesting to the verification of the products and their compliance with the regulated norms.

Where to begin

Many farmers are wondering about which number of birds can enter the business optimally and at minimal cost. A do-it-yourself mini-poultry farm for 500 layers will allow you to start an enterprise with small investments. If necessary, you can increase the economy by acquiring new birds or removing them from the incubator. The advantages of starting a business with a small population is the ability to choose the appropriate implementation method.

Room and equipment

When planning the construction of a room or the equipment of an already finished building for placement of chickens in it, optimal standards should be followed. It is recommended to plant 5 birds per square meter. For a livestock of 1,000 chickens, 200 square meters of free space is needed.

Cells should be placed on a raised platform from the floor. They should provide access to roosts, nests, drinkers and feeders. When cells are arranged in several tiers, the number of livestock can be increased up to 3000 pieces.

Some farmers are considering outdoor chickens. It is less costly and optimally suited for a novice entrepreneur. In this situation, it is enough to pay attention to the equipment of the litter. It is not necessary to build partitions, since it is possible to keep birds in a single room with one herd.

To reduce the entrepreneur’s expenses, it is recommended that a section on independent reproduction of the herd be included in his business plan. Growing hens is much cheaper than buying an adult bird.

Initially, you will have to invest in the purchase of an incubator and in additional equipment for the poultry farm. Chickens should be kept separately, because for the rapid growth of healthy birds, it is necessary to provide appropriate heating, ventilation, lighting and feeding regimes. Investments in the equipment of the incubator and premises for chickens pay off after the sale of eggs obtained in one season.

The norm of feed consumption per bird when growing it from birth to the moment when it begins to lay eggs, corresponds to 7.5 kilograms. A few weeks before the expected date for receiving the first eggs, chickens should be transferred to compound feed with special additives that stimulate egg production. Its monthly consumption per chicken is up to 5 kilograms. During the collection period, the color of the yolk should be controlled. If it is light, then the demand for the product can be reduced, so additives that normalize this parameter will have to be added to the feed.

Breed selection

Acquire an adult bird or eggs for incubation should only be an egg breed.

It is not recommended to choose egg-meat varieties of chickens. Egg birds are small in size, which leads to minimal costs for providing food. They are characterized by high rates of egg production. It is recommended that a novice farmer pay attention to chickens, the egg production of which corresponds to 85-95 percent. Such birds include breeds: shaver, leggorn, high-line, B-33, broken-brown.

Organization Costs

A poultry farm for 1000 laying hens requires an entrepreneur to invest 1,100,000 rubles. This amount includes 700,000 rubles for the construction of a room of 200 square meters and its insulation. If there is a finished building, the total cost will be reduced to 400,000 rubles. Buying equipment in the form of cages, drinking bowls and feeders will cost 150,000 rubles. For the purchase of adult laying hens, you need to spend 200,000 rubles. When planning independent hatching and rearing of chickens, expenditure should include the purchase of an incubator of 50,000 rubles and 20,000 rubles for the purchase of hatching eggs.

Regular Maintenance Costs

The cost of servicing the birds depends on their content, the type of feed used and their cost, as well as on the number of employees. The main waste articles are:

  • utility costs, which include heating, lighting and electricity - 15,000 rubles,
  • feed for 1000 birds - 30,000 rubles,
  • litter and vitamin and mineral supplements,
  • remuneration - 20,000 rubles per worker.

The poultry farm may specialize in:

  • in hatching chickens from an egg in an incubator,
  • on raising chickens to an adult bird,
  • in the production of eggs and meat products.

A farmer can specialize in one type of activity, as well as all at the same time. For successful production, products must regularly enter the market. For this, it is necessary to properly organize the work process and acquire for it a bird of a highly productive breed.

Laying hens are kept in windowless houses, because to ensure high egg production rates, constant regulation of daylight hours is necessary. Culling and death necessitate replenishment of the herd. Therefore, the farmer must take into account statistics and plan regular purchases of adults or small batches of hatching eggs to complement the herd.

To ensure the productivity of chickens, the temperature regime of the house should not go beyond 16-18 degrees Celsius, and the humidity should be at the level of 60-70 percent. An important effect on the egg laying of chickens is provided by good lighting and cleanliness of the house. The dust level of the room affects the general condition of the bird. In summer, it is recommended to install powerful fans to ensure air flow. In case of untimely cleaning of the room from litter, as a result of its decomposition, gases are released, the inhalation of which negatively affects the appetite of the bird.
