Plastic surgery of the nose is one of the most popular operations in aesthetic medicine, although rehabilitation is usually difficult. The thing is that surgical intervention is often necessary not only to change the shape of the nose, but also to treat pathologies of the respiratory system.

The likely consequences of rhinoplasty

Even if by nature a person did not get a nose of an ideal shape, everything can be fixed. Before this, however, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the possible consequences. Then the swelling of the nose after surgery will not be a surprise.

So, its side effects include:

In the photo, edema and bruising after rhinoplasty often look unpleasant, but this is a temporary effect, and it is observed in each patient. Because of the bandage on the nose, a person usually does not notice a problem, and then, when the gypsum is removed, he begins to worry very much, because his appearance differs from ideal. Particularly pronounced in the photo is swelling of the tip of the nose after rhinoplasty, and in general it often swells. It’s not worth worrying, because it takes five to eight weeks.

They are inevitable after surgery, and the intensity depends on the amount of work of the surgeon. Usually hematomas disappear after 15-20 days. If the bruises after rhinoplasty do not quickly disappear, you can use an ointment or start taking a medicine selected by your doctor

They often occur during and after surgery, but pass quickly - in a couple of days. To stop the blood, the medical staff uses tampons and vasoconstrictors.

Their appearance, as a rule, is explained by the method of the operation. It can be closed and open.

This problem is also not critical, but it usually appears due to the fact that there are tampons in the nose.

Recovery period after surgery

It is difficult to answer the question of how long the edema lasts after rhinoplasty up to a day. The swelling itself is not surprising: the skin during surgery is first peeled off and then returned to its place. This causes swelling. They may appear on the nose or, for example, under the eyes.

Gradually, edema decreases. Mostly the swelling subsides in three weeks, but a full recovery is possible a year after rhinoplasty or a little earlier.

What triggers the appearance of edema

A patient, viewing a photo report on the Web with edema after rhinoplasty, may be worried that his signs of surgery are noticeable much more than others. In most cases, this is not so; it is simply difficult for a person to adequately assess his appearance. But, of course, you should not neglect this topic.

It must be remembered that the intensification of edema leads to:

1) hot and cold compresses,

2) strong pressure on the nose,

3) lack of fresh air and walks,

4) sleep in the wrong position,

5) strong head tilts,

6) alcohol and smoking.

The first month after rhinoplasty, these factors are the most dangerous, so you need to monitor yourself especially carefully.

How to quickly solve the problem

There are several options for removing swelling of the nose after rhinoplasty quickly. Special ointments, mineral and vitamin supplements, antibiotics and probiotics will help, for example. Cosmetology procedures and physiotherapy will have their effect. The surgeon tells in detail about this when the patient asks how much the nose swelling after rhinoplasty comes down. He will also show photos before and after the operation, which will help you understand what to expect.

Phased recovery after surgery

To understand how much your nose heals after rhinoplasty, it is important to understand how the rehabilitation goes. At the first stage, the patient wears a bandage and plaster for a week, which is why swelling is not very noticeable. Sometimes the nose after rhinoplasty swells only in the evening.

At the second stage, lasting three weeks, a strong swelling appears on the face. Viewing the appropriate photo of the swelling of the tip of the nose after rhinoplasty allows the patient to make sure that there is nothing abnormal in his situation.

The third stage takes about three months. During this time, the main edema passes, but the nose has not yet taken its final shape.

It becomes ideal only in the fourth stage. It begins three months after surgery and lasts up to a year.

What happens to nasal tissues after surgery?

Surgical intervention for our body is primarily incisions, which means injury. And one should be prepared for the fact that edema will be: this is a natural reaction of our body to a violation of its integrity, creating conditions for healing. In order for tissues to recover as quickly as possible, it is necessary to accelerate metabolic processes in the damaged area, to ensure rapid cell division and the formation of an intercellular matrix. And liquid is a necessary medium for this.

The severity of the edema depends on the volume of the operation - on what parts of the nose were affected by the surgeon: only the skin and cartilage structures or also the bones. Swelling can occur even after non-surgical rhinoplasty, when the shape or size of the nose is adjusted with fillers. In this case, it develops as a reaction to tissue damage by syringe needles and gel, which, when introduced, delaminates and spreads them.

How long does puffiness last?

On average, the period of complete resorption of excess fluid in the nose after plastic surgery is about one year. Someone has a little less, someone has more - a lot depends on the individual characteristics of the body, the methods of face care during the recovery period and the patient's compliance with all the doctor's recommendations.

The severity of edema will change over time. Surgeons divide this process into 4 main stages, for each of which there are manifestations and symptoms, as well as limitations and recommendations. Now we will consider each of them in detail.

The first stage (1 week after surgery)

The most difficult period for most patients. Edema begins to form already on the operating table, during the execution of manipulations, and during the first few days it will increase. In order to keep the structures of the operated nose in the correct position relative to each other, a special splint or butterfly-shaped bandage is applied to it. They prevent the development of swelling in the area of application, so the fluid can accumulate in the eyelids, cheeks, chin - sometimes in such quantities that the patient does not see his eyes.

To reduce discomfort at this stage, from the first day you will need to follow a few simple rules:

  • sleep half-sitting - on a high pillow or with a raised headboard: this position contributes to a better outflow of blood from the head,
  • reduce physical activity, completely abandon any work with the head or body tilted,
  • protect your face from excessive heat: exclude the bath / sauna, avoid being in the warm air for a long time from a stove, fireplace, etc.,
  • with the permission of a doctor, apply cold compresses,
  • avoid water on the bandages and nose during washing,
  • Do not touch the face again, do not massage, do not use cosmetics, including face creams.

The presence of edema, as well as hematoma, the inability to breathe through the nose, postoperative pain and a high risk of bleeding make the first week a period of forced social isolation for the patient - you must be prepared for this in advance, both mentally and physically.

The second stage (2-3 weeks)

Well-being in comparison with the previous period begins to improve. Swelling gradually subsides, and often by the end of the second period it remains noticeable only to the patient himself. This allows you to return to everyday work and communication with people. To further accelerate rehabilitation, before the end of the third week it is necessary:

  • refuse to sleep on the side or on the stomach so that liquid does not accumulate in the soft tissues of the face,
  • gently care for the face when cleansing the skin and applying makeup - to prevent significant displacement of tissues,
  • continue to avoid thermal effects,
  • limit physical activity and completely abandon slopes.

By agreement with the doctor, you can start using Traumeel edema gel or any other drug with absorbable and lymphatic drainage effects. However, the healing process continues, so you should not rely on a complete disposal of excess fluid in a short time.

The third stage (2-3 month after surgery)

If at the previous stage it took up to 50% of the edema, then on this it disappears almost completely and can only be preserved in the form of small seals of the back of the nose or its tip - thus, it will be possible to draw the first conclusions about the results of the operation as a whole. It should be remembered that further resorption will inhibit:

  • smoking,
  • alcohol consumption,
  • lack of exercise
  • the habit of rubbing your nose often, as well as the pressure on it of the temples or other devices,
  • head tilts, especially long
  • sleep in certain poses (on the side, on the stomach).

The fourth stage (from the 4th month to 1 year)

During this period, as a rule, a slight compaction of the individual parts of the nose, which are most affected during the operation, is maintained. For the patient, they can still be noticeable, but if there were no obvious complications or “side effects”, then from the side the nose should look perfect.

How to remove residual effects? There are two options: be patient and wait, or conduct physiotherapy treatment aimed at improving microcirculation in the tissues. For example, ultrasound or phonophoresis is a procedure in which drugs are injected into the deeper layers of the skin using ultrasonic vibrations. It actively reduces swelling, activates tissue regeneration.

As you can see, the process of rehabilitation after rhinoplasty is long and takes longer than promised in advertising articles. However, with proper care of the nose (and face) after 3-4 months, nothing will betray the fact of the operation.

Opinions of experts

Edema after rhinoplasty is more often moderate than severe. Bruises usually last 2-3 weeks, and the main excess volume is two months. But the form, as a rule, is already pleasing. With simultaneous plastic septum, the nose can also breathe badly for 2 months. This is due to the presence of internal edema of the nasal mucosa.

In general, the volume of puffiness and how much it holds depends on the individual properties of the body: fragility and bleeding of blood vessels, skin thickness, age, etc. Also, the duration and scope of the operation is important.

As for open and closed rhinoplasty, in my practice I do not notice differences in edema after them. The whole difference between these methods is in cutting the strip of skin between the nostrils, which is called columella, and the vessels passing through it. But blood and fluid flow perfectly along the collaterals (other vessels of the skin of the nose), bypassing the interrupted bundle.

To make swelling faster, first of all you need to follow the doctor’s prescription and not engage in useless and often dangerous self-medication. It is very important to cultivate patience in yourself. Plastic is not magic, and the result takes time. For some of my patients, I prescribe special medications before surgery that reduce bleeding and swelling. Microcurrent therapy and special injections during the recovery period can also accelerate the process.

It is worth noting that some patients do very dangerous things, the worst of them are:

  • Gypsum compression in the hope of "squeezing out" swelling as soon as possible. As a result, dented or flared bones, irregularities on the back of the nose, curvature, etc.
  • The use of diuretics (diuretics), and in large doses. Fluid leaves the body along with calcium and other important elements, which in turn impairs healing, and also reduces pressure and can cause collapse.

If the swelling does not go away for a long time, the doctor may prescribe injections, physiotherapy, massages and more. Now in many clinics there are rehabilitation specialists who can help and own a variety of techniques. However, it is important to remember - edema disappears before 1 year and this is normal. We must be prepared for this and be patient.

Grigoryants Vladislav Semenovich

plastic surgeon, clinic "Arbat Aesthetic":

This problem is most relevant in the first few days. But the gypsum placed on top and the special plastic tubes installed inside the nose - splints - do not allow the swelling of soft tissues and nasal mucosa to fully develop. Thanks to them, our patient can also breathe through his nose almost immediately after surgery. Completely excess fluid directly from the nose leaves within 6-10 months. In patients with excessively thick oily skin, it can linger even longer. But the most interesting is that, according to my observations, no one except the patient himself does not notice this swelling.

If the patient wants to recover as soon as possible - for example, he or she needs to return to work as quickly as possible, I recommend using rehabilitation procedures in the form of microcurrent therapy and phototherapy. Despite their apparent banality, it is they who give the most pronounced positive result.

Kosinets Vladimir Alexandrovich

MD, Leading Plastic Surgeon at the GEMC Aesthetic Clinic:

Edema is an inevitable component of the postoperative period with rhinoplasty. Its severity is largely due to the individual characteristics of the body, as well as the volume of the operation. As a rule, it begins to decrease after 2 weeks and passes completely within 2-3 months.

There is no reliable data on the difference in the level of edema in the closed and open accesses of rhinoplasty. However, it is possible that with open access it may be larger due to the intersection of the vessels of columella. In any case, the operation technique, which has a huge number of nuances, will be much more significant.

In order for the swelling to go away as quickly as possible, it is necessary, first of all, to follow the general recommendations, this is extremely important! The first time after surgery, you only need to sleep on your back, do not lift weights, limit yourself to physical activity, sharp head tilts are not recommended. Also, as prescribed by the surgeon, various ointments, gels are used that help reduce edema. If the situation does not improve, the most appropriate solution would be to contact your surgeon and follow his recommendations.

Abrahamyan Solomon Maisovich

plastic, maxillofacial surgeon "Frau Clinics":

Primary, most pronounced edema, as a rule, persists for two weeks after nose surgery. However, to one degree or another, puffiness persists for a period of several months to six months - here everything depends on the individual characteristics of the body. But the role of access, which was used, is small. Nevertheless, the smaller the intraoperative trauma, the less pronounced the swelling. Thus, with closed rhinoplasty there are prerequisites for a smoother and more predictable postoperative period.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to speed up the process of edema decline, so the patient only needs to be patient and follow all the recommendations of his plastic surgeon.

What is rhinoseptoplasty

Edema after rhinoplasty occurs at different times after surgery. Based on this criterion, they are divided into 4 groups:

  • primary
  • secondary
  • residual
  • swelling in the area periosteum.

The first signs of edema occur during the operation. In order to minimize this process, gypsum is applied to the patient, turundochi are inserted into the nostrils. In addition to the fact that edema can greatly interfere with the doctor during the operation, it can spread to the neck and face, under the eyes.

Reduction of edema should be expected after 4 days from the time of surgery. In the first few days, the patient can observe severe swelling after rhinoplasty, which will subside over time.

Secondary edema is practically not visible visually, since it is located in the deep layers of the skin, periosteum, near the cartilage. It gives the patient many inconveniences. Since the mucous membrane swells, a nasal congestion occurs in a person, notes of nasal nostrils are heard in the voice.

Secondary edema has its own specific manifestations:

  • going on compaction nasal tissues
  • observed expansion its tip.

Secondary edema lasts a long time: from a month to two. At this stage, it seems to the patient that something went wrong, so there is a stuffy nose. Many try to resort to various means to reduce swelling, but they give only a temporary effect. The main thing at this stage is to be patient.

Residual edema appears at the last stage of rehabilitation. Visually, it is not noticeable, because it is located very deep. Many patients note that the tip of the nose remains hard to the touch.

Fully swelling subsides after a year and a half after the operation. На то, чтобы восстановилось кровоснабжение, нужно много времени. Когда этот процесс будет полностью восстановлен, отек спадет.

It has been observed that edema persists longer in patients with thicker skin, as well as in those who have repeated rhinoplasty. After the operation, scars remain inside. Blood circulation in these areas is impaired, respectively, recovery lasts longer.

Periosteum edema often occurs after an osteotomy. The periosteum is a thin tissue covering the bone. It plays a key role in the process of bone fusion. Swelling on the bridge of the nose after rhinoplasty occurs if the bone is injured in any way during the operation.

Swelling may appear on the sides of the nose, looks like a dense corns. Such edema is dangerous because there is no cure for it, a growth may appear. You can get rid of it only with the help of surgical intervention.

It is impossible to independently reduce such edema. You need to see a doctor who will introduce a special tool instead of a seal.

In some cases, the patient himself provokes the appearance of bone marrow. The main reason is wearing sunglasses in the early periods of rehabilitation. They squeeze the bridge of the nose, causing the bone to grow together incorrectly. The year after rhinoplasty is the standard period for which bones must be fused, blood circulation restored and edema subsided.

To get rid of edema or speed up the process of removing them is almost impossible. The maximum that can be done is to follow the doctor's recommendations so that this process goes without complications.

Causes of edema

The main reason for the appearance of puffiness is that the skin exfoliates and shifts during the operation. This is necessary to get to the bone and cartilage. As a result, blood vessels are damaged, blood circulation is disturbed and, as a result, edema.

There are additional factors that influence the appearance of puffiness.

The degree of complexity of the operation

The larger the site of intervention, the greater the swelling. If the operation is carried out only on the tip of the nose, touching the cartilage, the side effect in the form of edema will not be as visible as with osteotomy.

Removing the hump is one of the most difficult and traumatic operations, since bone tissue is injured. The consequence of such an operation may be swelling of not only the nose, but also the face as a whole. Swelling is longer than with other types of rhinoplasty.

When correcting the wings of the nose, the trauma for the patient is the lowest. In this case, the swelling is slight and disappears quite quickly. The rehabilitation period for this type of operation is six months.

During repeated rhinoplasty, the edema is significant due to repeated surgical intervention.

Why does it appear

If you decide on an operation to correct the shape of the nose - rhinoplasty - you need to understand that you will have to face the problem of edema in any case.

Edema after rhinoplasty of the nose occurs in everyone, the difference is only in its severity.

With detachment, blood vessels are damaged, as a result of this, blood circulation and fluid outflow worsen.

It is pointless to make a complaint to the surgeon about puffiness - this does not depend on his qualifications, but only on the volume of the operation, as well as the individual properties of the patient's body.

Edema subsides only when normal tissue blood flow is restored.

After the operation, a plaster cast or a special splint is mandatory, which inhibits swelling, while fixing the shape of the nose.

How much is holding

Nasal edema appears during the operation (primary), which an experienced surgeon copes with, well guided in edematous tissues.

Primary - lasts 10 days, going down after about two weeks.

After removing the cast, for a month or a month and a half, the edema, called secondary, still persists. It is much less pronounced than the primary:

  • slightly densified fabric
  • expanded tip and nasal bridge.

After two months after rhinoplasty surgery, they talk about residual edema, which in most cases is already invisible to others.

How much edema comes off

The first stage - edema disappears within 7-10 days. The first signs that the swelling subsides appear 4 days after surgery.

Secondary edema - up to three weeks.

The third stage can last two and a half to three months.

The fourth stage is from a year and a half.

The end of the recovery period is considered the complete disappearance of signs of swelling.

First week

Thanks to the plaster cast, the swelling on the nose will not be too pronounced, but can spread down to the cheeks and chin.

In this period, it is not recommended:

  1. tilt your head and body, lift weights,
  2. put pressure on your nose, touch your face with your hands,
  3. sleep on a low pillow: it is better to sleep in a half-sitting position to increase the outflow of blood from the head,
  4. affect the face with high temperatures and hot water (you can not visit the bathhouse, sauna, bask in the fireplace, in no case do hot compresses),
  5. use cosmetics (including creams),
  6. take diuretic (diuretic) drugs, since these drugs wash out calcium, and this worsens the healing of postoperative wounds,

Second and third weeks

At the end of the first week:

  1. plaster dressings are removed, as well as internal splints, seams,
  2. the internal structures of the nose are washed,
  3. breathing improves
  4. the swelling lasts
  5. the nose is deformed
  6. often, edema is more pronounced compared to the first week after surgery.

By the end of the third week, edema, as a rule, is reduced by half.

In this period you need:

  1. sleep on your back (to prevent accumulation of fluid in the soft tissues of the face,
  2. avoid hot air, water, overheating,
  3. very delicately handle your face when washing, do not rub your nose and do not put pressure on it,
  4. avoid tilting the head, hard physical labor, intense exercise,
  5. if the swelling is still noticeable enough, you can apply lymphatic drainage ointments and gels after consulting a doctor.

Until the end of the third month

But the appearance of the nose is still not perfect, there is still a slight swelling of the tip of the nose, nostrils.

In this period, in order to get in shape as soon as possible, it is necessary to exclude:

  1. smoking and alcohol abuse,
  2. sleep on your side and stomach
  3. rubbing the nose
  4. long and frequent tilts of the head,
  5. Wearing glasses tight to the bridge of the nose.

From the third month to a year, the final stage of recovery continues.

In this period, the swelling is almost invisible, the nose becomes final.

It should be noted that in patients with thick skin, edema lasts longer than in patients with thin skin. This is due to the fact that a thicker skin requires more nutrition, which means that it contains more vessels and veins that will be damaged during the operation. Accordingly, their recovery time will be longer.

General recommendations

It is necessary to follow all the recommendations of the attending physician, in particular, taking antibiotics, since these drugs, in addition to antibacterial, also have a decongestant effect.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also produce a decongestant effect.

Be careful with the use of vasoconstrictor drops, do not abuse them.

It is also necessary:

  1. eat right: First of all, to minimize the use of salty, sour, spicy foods,
  2. Do not smoke: smoking worsens blood circulation, especially in small capillaries; as a result, tissues swell more strongly. In addition, smoking can lead to the development of a formidable complication in the form of death or tissue necrosis,
  3. exclude alcohol especially carbonated alcoholic beverages: champagne, beer, etc.,
  4. remove the source of stress and try to experience as many positive emotions as possible.

Drugs

A good decongestant effect is provided by various ointments, gels and creams:

  1. an excellent remedy for relieving edema is Badyaga - a product of animal origin,
  2. troxevasin ointment - antiprotective depression having a pronounced decongestant effect,
  3. drug "Traumeel" (ointment, gel) - An excellent homeopathic remedy, having high regenerative properties, well reducing swelling.
  4. ointments "Lyoton", "Panthenol".

The drug Bromelain (a product based on an extract of extract from pineapple fruits) has proven itself well. This drug is taken before surgery to reduce swelling.

Physiotherapy

Also assigned:

  1. phonophoresis (sonication of the affected area in combination with the drug),
  2. electrophoresis (treatment of the affected area with electric current in combination with a drug),
  3. phototherapy (The therapeutic effect consists in influencing the near-infrared and blue ranges on the edema area).

Folk methods

Traditional medicine means work quite effectively in the fight against puffiness:

  1. good old aloe and in this case helps: you need to cut the leaf of this plant along and slice it to the edematous region,
  2. dried arnica, which can be drunk as tea, will also help (brew 2 teaspoons per glass of boiling water) 2 times a day, and also use as compresses,
  3. compresses based on decoctions of a string and chamomile help with swelling of the nose: a piece of bandage or gauze soaked in broth should be applied to the edematous area for 20 minutes, do the procedure for at least a week,
  4. the decongestant properties of ginger are known, a piece of the root of which can be thrown into tea leaves can be brewed as an independent drink - cut about 4 cm of ginger root into thin strips and pour 2 liters of water, brew in a thermos, add honey, lemon and drink throughout the day. Ginger should be used with caution, it is not shown to everyone, in particular, to people with high acidity of gastric juice, hypertension, allergies, etc.

But you need to remember that the use of decongestants is temporary.

Only some hormone-containing drugs directly affect the degree of swelling (for example, diprospan injection).

But the decision on their appointment can only be made by a doctor! And the best doctor for edema is time.

And your patience, which in this case must be shown inevitably, because the truth is that rhinoplasty is a very difficult operation, and the recovery period after it is quite long.

How to reduce nose with potatoes

  • Anna Yurievna Vershinina
  • June 19, 2019

There are general recommendations, compliance with which will slightly reduce the patient's moral and physical problems.

Reducing the load on the nose. These include the following restrictions:

  • avoid physical loads especially the tilt of the head and torso,
  • keep your nose away injuries
  • limit thermal treatments, visits to baths, saunas, solariums,
  • give up smoking and alcohol
  • to avoid crying because bleeding may open
  • not sunbathe,
  • avoid diseases ARVI, since they can lead to additional swelling of the mucosa,
  • reduce conversations
  • you need to wash your face water room temperature, without affecting the dressing.

In order to quickly get rid of residual edema, the patient must follow certain nutritional rules. There is a list of products that need to be limited 14 days before the operation, and two weeks after.

It includes products such as:

  • almond nuts
  • berries
  • cucumber,
  • grapefruit
  • lemon,
  • grapes
  • peaches and apricots
  • oranges
  • tomatoes and cucumbers
  • raisins,
  • garlic,
  • fish fat,
  • vinegar,
  • juices from cranberries, oranges.

7-10 days before surgery, you must go on a low-salt diet. An excess of salty food retains fluid in the body and provokes the formation of puffiness. You should also limit the consumption of complex carbohydrates: bread, rice, potatoes, pasta.

In addition, it is forbidden to take medicines containing aspirin. They thin the blood, which can cause bleeding. Also, you can not take drugs for weight loss.

Following a diet and consuming large amounts of vitamins helps to reduce swelling of the nose after rhinoplasty.

Medical preparations

There are no creams, ointments, or tablets, the use of which will give a tangible and long-term effect, but their systematic use can alleviate the condition for a while.

The most popular medications:

  1. Voltaren-gel
  2. Traumeel (available in tablet form)
  3. Enzyme Bromelain
  4. Wobenzym.

The essence of applying compresses is to apply ice or chilled objects to the nose. You can use cotton pads, gauze, pieces of cloth moistened with cold water.

It must be remembered that the compress should not be applied to the nose itself, but to the area nearby, since there is a risk of trauma to the cartilage or bone displacement.

Ointments and creams

To reduce puffiness, many doctors advise applying special ointments with anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects. You need to apply them using applicators or a cotton swab, not with your fingers. It is important to avoid getting the drug on the seams.
